Many first-graders forget to multiply the tens digit and only multiply the ones place—so 23 × 2 becomes 6 instead of 46. Others write down partial products in the wrong columns or lose track of their work when moving between tens and ones. You'll spot this when a child's answer is missing a zero or is drastically too small. Watch for students who rush and don't regroup correctly, or who multiply the same digit twice without moving to the next place value.
Use a real grocery or snack scenario: ask your child, 'If a box has 12 cookies and we buy 3 boxes, how many cookies total?' Let them draw circles for boxes or use actual items to group and count. This makes the 12 × 3 concrete and memorable. Follow up by asking how many tens and how many ones they counted, connecting their hands-on work directly to the numbers on paper.
