Addition is one of the first mathematical tools your child uses to make sense of the world around them. At age 6-7, their brain is developing the ability to hold numbers in their head and combine them—a skill that shows up constantly in everyday moments like sharing snacks, counting toys, or figuring out how many crayons they have altogether. When children master addition facts, they build confidence and develop number sense, which means they understand how numbers relate to each other rather than just memorizing facts. These early addition skills also lay the groundwork for all future math, from subtraction to multiplication. Most importantly, fluency with basic addition (sums to 10) frees up mental energy so your child can tackle more complex problem-solving without getting stuck on basic computation.
The most common mistake is counting from 1 every time instead of "counting on." For example, when solving 7 + 3, a child might recount 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and then 1, 2, 3 rather than starting at 7 and counting up. You'll spot this by watching how long they take or noticing they use their fingers to recount the whole first number. Another frequent error is reversing digits in the answer or misaligning numbers, especially when writing equations. Celebrating counting-on strategies early helps students move past the slower counting-from-1 approach.
Use snack time or toy time as a natural addition lab. Ask your child, "You have 4 crackers and I'm giving you 2 more—how many will you have?" Let them solve it however feels easiest: by counting on their fingers, lining up snacks, or just thinking it through. The magic happens when you repeat the same combination a few times across different days—4 + 2 with crackers, then 4 + 2 with blocks—so the number pattern sticks without it feeling like work. This real repetition with objects they can see and touch is far more powerful than worksheets alone for a 6-year-old.
