Common mistakes to watch for

Many first graders count from 1 every time, rather than counting on from the larger number—so for 7 + 2, they'll recount all the way from 1 instead of starting at 7 and counting up to 8, 9. Watch for hesitation on "doubles" (like 5 + 5) and pairs that make 10 (like 6 + 4), which should become automatic. Some children also reverse addends without noticing (writing 3 + 4 as 4 + 3 in a different problem) because they haven't yet internalized that order doesn't change the sum. You'll spot this if they're solving the same pair differently on different rows or using different strategies for the same problem.

Teacher Tip

During mealtime or snack time, practice addition with real objects your child can touch. For example, put 4 crackers on one side of a plate and 3 on the other, then ask, "How many crackers altogether?" Let your child move them together and count. Repeat with different numbers daily for just 2–3 minutes.
