Many second graders count from 1 every time instead of counting on from the larger number—so they'll count 1, 2, 3... 12, 13, 14, 15 for 12 + 3 instead of starting at 12 and counting up three more. You might also notice they lose track partway through and arrive at the wrong sum, or they skip numbers in their counting sequence. Another common pattern is confusing the order: they know 8 + 6 but struggle when they see 6 + 8, not yet internalizing that the order doesn't change the answer. Watch for hesitation, finger-counting that doesn't match their verbal answer, or inconsistent results on the same problem done twice.
Play a real-world addition game at home by having your child combine small household items—buttons, coins, crackers, or toy blocks—and practice combining groups while you narrate: "You have 7 buttons and I found 5 more. How many do we have altogether?" This concrete, hands-on approach lets them see addition happening in real time, and it's far more engaging than worksheets alone. Keep the numbers small (sums under 15) and celebrate their thinking process, not just the answer. Rotate this activity into your routine once or twice a week during dinner prep or playtime.
