Let them physically arrange crackers or small objects into groups, then count to verify. This concrete, hands-on practice with real items bridges the gap between worksheets and number understanding. Repeat with different totals, keeping sums within 20, and celebrate when they start using strategies like 'counting on' instead of counting from one.
