Second graders who master these combinations develop number sense—understanding that 8 + 5 is the same as 5 + 8, or that 9 + 7 is just one more than 8 + 7. This automaticity frees up mental energy for multi-step problems and word problems they'll encounter later. In daily life, children use these facts constantly: combining toy collections, figuring out total snacks, or keeping score in games. When students can quickly recall that 6 + 4 = 10 or 7 + 8 = 15 without counting on their fingers, they gain confidence and independence in problem-solving. Regular drill practice, even just 5-10 minutes, helps cement these facts into working memory so they become as automatic as reciting their name.
Many second graders still rely on counting-all rather than counting-on, touching fingers or objects for every single number. You'll notice this if a child solving 7 + 5 starts at 1 and counts all the way to 12 instead of starting at 7 and adding 5 more. Another common error is reversing or misremembering facts—especially double-plus-one combinations like confusing 5 + 6 = 11 or 8 + 9 = 17. Some students also struggle with the teen numbers (11–19), losing track of tens and ones. If your child is still using fingers for nearly every problem or frequently gives answers that are off by one, they need more strategy practice before memorization will stick.
Play a quick dice game at home: roll two standard dice (removing or covering the six if needed to stay within 20) and have your child say the sum aloud before you reveal the answer. This keeps addition playful and reveals which combinations need more practice. You can also turn it into a gallery walk—write five addition problems on sticky notes around a room and have your child solve them as they "visit" each one, which adds movement and novelty. Even 5 minutes of daily play like this builds automaticity much faster than worksheets alone.
