Many Grade 2 students count backward incorrectly from the starting number, forgetting to count that number itself—for example, saying 9 − 3 = 5 because they count "9, 8, 7" and stop too soon. Another frequent error is reversing the problem: if they see 12 − 5, they subtract the smaller from the larger to get a "nicer" answer. You'll spot this pattern when a child consistently gives answers that are too large or when their answers don't match their finger-counting. Watch during drills for hesitation or finger-counting that doesn't match their verbal answer—this signals they need more concrete practice before moving to the abstract.
Create a simple "harvest basket" game at home using snacks or small objects: place 14 crackers or grapes in a bowl, have your child close their eyes while you hide 3 under a napkin, then ask "How many are hiding?" This lets them subtract by counting what's left, then checking by counting the hidden ones. Repeat with different starting numbers (staying under 20) and let them take turns hiding. This real, hands-on version of subtraction is far more powerful than worksheets alone and makes the concept stick because it's playful and immediate.
