About This Activity

Zoe unearthed a towering fossil wall inside her block-builders excavation site.

Teacher Tip

Have students physically stack labeled cardboard blocks to represent rock strata — assign each block one vocabulary word (STRATUM, SEDIMENT, BEDROCK, etc.) and challenge them to arrange the blocks using SUPERPOSITION, then 'erode' or 'uplift' their structures while narrating what Zoe might observe at each layer.

Vocabulary Words
STRATUMA single flat layer of rock stacked on top of older layers below.
FOSSILThe hardened remains of an ancient creature preserved inside rock.
EROSIONWhen wind or water slowly wears away and moves rock and soil.
EPOCHA long stretch of Earth's history marked by major changes or events.
SEDIMENTTiny pieces of sand, mud, or rock that settle and pile up over time.
UPLIFTWhen giant forces inside Earth push rock layers upward to form mountains.
BEDROCKThe solid, unbroken layer of rock found deepest beneath the ground surface.
SUPERPOSITIONThe rule that older rock layers always lie beneath younger ones above them.
