Counting is the foundation of all mathematics, and at age 6-7, your child's brain is ready to master this skill in meaningful ways. When first graders can count accurately—both forward and backward, with and without objects—they're building number sense, which is essential for addition, subtraction, and understanding how math works in the real world. Counting helps children organize their thinking, follow sequences, and recognize patterns they'll encounter everywhere: from counting coins at a store to keeping track of days until a special event. As children practice counting in this worksheet, they're also strengthening their memory, attention span, and ability to coordinate their finger movements with their voice. These skills support reading readiness too, since both involve following a sequence and tracking progress. Many Grade 1 students skip numbers when counting aloud (saying 1, 2, 4, 6 instead of the full sequence) or point to objects randomly without matching each count to one object. Another common error is losing track partway through and starting over from 1, or counting the same object twice. You'll notice this when your child counts a pile of blocks and gets a different answer each time. The fix is to slow down together, touch each item once, and say the number out loud for that one item before moving to the next.
Make counting a game during everyday moments: while climbing stairs, count each step together ("1, 2, 3..."); while eating snacks, count out exactly 10 crackers and eat one while saying the next number backward; or count how many times you clap while your child sings a short song. These real-time, playful moments help counting feel automatic and fun, not like a test. Repetition with movement and voice makes the counting sequence stick in memory much better than worksheets alone.
