Common mistakes to watch for
Many Grade 1 students skip numbers when counting aloud (saying 1, 2, 4, 6 instead of the full sequence) or point to objects randomly without matching each count to one object. Another common error is losing track partway through and starting over from 1, or counting the same object twice. You'll notice this when your child counts a pile of blocks and gets a different answer each time. The fix is to slow down together, touch each item once, and say the number out loud for that one item before moving to the next.

Make counting a game during everyday moments: while climbing stairs, count each step together ("1, 2, 3..."); while eating snacks, count out exactly 10 crackers and eat one while saying the next number backward; or count how many times you clap while your child sings a short song.
