Subtraction is one of the most practical math skills your second grader will develop this year. At ages 7-8, children are moving beyond counting on their fingers and beginning to understand that subtraction represents "taking away" or "finding the difference" between groups. This skill is essential for everyday situations—from figuring out how many crayons are left after sharing with a friend, to understanding change at a store, to solving simple word problems. When students master subtraction within 20, they build confidence in their mathematical thinking and develop stronger number sense. They're also strengthening working memory and the ability to visualize quantities mentally, which supports reading comprehension and problem-solving across all subjects. Most importantly, subtraction lays the foundation for more complex math concepts like regrouping, fractions, and even algebra later on.
Many Grade 2 students confuse the direction of subtraction and count backward from the larger number instead of starting with the whole amount. For example, when solving 15 − 7, they'll count backward from 15 rather than recognizing that 7 items are being removed from a group of 15. Another frequent error is miscounting when using "counting on" to find the difference—a child might lose track and skip a number. You'll spot this when they write answers that are off by one or two. Listen carefully as they solve: if they're confused about what the problem is asking (is this about taking away or comparing?), they'll often guess rather than use a strategy.
Play a subtraction game during snack time or outdoor play. If your child has 12 crackers, ask them to subtract different amounts: "If you eat 3, how many are left?" Let them physically move or remove items as they solve. This makes subtraction concrete and prevents the abstract frustration that can happen on paper alone. After a few rounds, challenge them to solve without moving the items, closing their eyes to 'picture' the answer. This bridges the gap between hands-on learning and mental math that's critical at this age.
